Meg Lanning, the Australian captain, has been compelled to withdraw from the upcoming Women’s Ashes due to health concerns. Alyssa Healy will step in as the team’s captain for the multi-format series commencing on June 22. Lanning, who took a break to prioritize her mental well-being, made a comeback to the sport in January.
Following her return, Lanning played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph in the T20 World Cup in South Africa in March. She also participated in the inaugural Women’s Premier League, where she captained the Delhi Capitals to an impressive journey to the finals, albeit falling short against the Mumbai Indians.
“It’s unfortunate news for Meg, and she is understandably disappointed to be ruled out of the Ashes. This series holds great significance for the team, and her absence will be felt. However, she comprehends the importance of prioritizing her health,” stated Shawn Flegler, Cricket Australia’s head of performance for women’s cricket.
“Meg will remain at home, receiving ongoing medical support, with the aim of returning to playing as soon as possible. We kindly request that Meg’s privacy be respected during this time,” he added.
