Chris Woakes, the seasoned English all-rounder, is eager to make his mark for the national team during a busy summer of cricket following his recovery from a knee injury that sidelined him for a significant period. Having missed the entirety of last summer’s cricket, including first-class matches, Woakes is determined to showcase his skills once again.
Known for his lethal effectiveness with the new ball, Woakes last represented England in a Test series against the West Indies back in March 2022. The 34-year-old fast bowler from Birmingham experienced frustration due to his absence from the game and even contemplated his future during his knee injury. However, a recall to the national squad for the solitary Test against Ireland reignited his hopes of regaining his place in Ben Stokes’ lineup.
“For me, personally, the previous summer was a difficult time as I couldn’t participate in cricket in any way, not even with the England team. When I received the call from Brendon [McCullum], it felt special—almost like a first call-up. It always means a lot, and I’m thrilled to be back in the mix,” Woakes expressed during a press conference at Lord’s on Tuesday.
“Like many professional athletes, I too had my share of doubts when it came to representing England once again in sports. Whether it’s due to form, injury, or other factors, there are always talented younger players knocking on the door, ready to step in. But I’m determined to overcome those challenges and prove myself once more,” Woakes added.
