Former India opener Aakash Chopra criticized India’s lackluster performance in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they suffered a 209-run defeat to Australia on the final day of the one-off Test at The Oval in London. Chopra highlighted India’s disappointing display in both batting and bowling, with the team conceding high totals and failing to score competitively. This loss marked India’s second consecutive defeat in the WTC final.
Addressing India’s defeat, the former cricketer emphasized that the batting department has been a major concern. He suggested that the blame should not be placed on the bowlers but rather on the batsmen. According to Chopra, had India batted first after winning the toss, they could have achieved a score of 400 runs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra stated, “The issue lies in a specific area. It’s not the fault of the bowlers. If you analyze this match, there might be a slight recency bias. People might argue that conceding 470 runs indicates the bowlers’ mistakes, but what could the batsmen have done differently? Given the opportunity, the batting lineup would have scored 400 runs by opting to bat first after winning the toss.”
