According to former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, the decision to not give more opportunities to young players in the Test matches against West Indies is a missed opportunity for Team India. Gavaskar believes that the focus should have been on the players who are certain to participate in the ODI World Cup later this year, suggesting that they should have concentrated solely on white-ball cricket.
Gavaskar expressed his views on Sports Today, stating, “The World Test Championship is now out of reach. We missed our chance there. The next significant event is the ODI World Cup in October, and therefore, I would have preferred that the experienced players take a complete break from Test cricket. They should have solely focused on white-ball cricket instead of red-ball cricket. Given that they have been playing cricket continuously for 3-4 months, with hardly any rest, I feel they needed a break.”
“If the senior players had been given a break and a few more young players had been given the opportunity, it would have been highly beneficial for Indian cricket. Unfortunately, that did not happen. I believe it was a wonderful opportunity that went amiss,” Gavaskar concluded.
