Ahead of the Major League Cricket 2023 season, Dale Steyn, the ex-South African speedster, has been named as the bowling coach for the Washington Freedom side. Joining him is Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques, who has been named the captain of the team. Henriques, at the age of 36, brings valuable T20 leadership experience, having achieved success with the Sydney Sixers in Australia’s premier T20 tournament, the Big Bash League (BBL), where he secured two titles in the past five seasons.
Under Henriques’ guidance, Washington Freedom will feature a talented lineup of international stars, including Anrich Nortje, Wanindu Hasaranga, Glenn Phillips, Marco Jansen, and Adam Milne, as previously announced by the franchise. Leading the team as the head coach will be Greg Shipperd, who has held the position with the Sydney Sixers since 2015, following a four-year stint with the Indian Premier League franchise, Delhi Daredevils.
The inclusion of Dale Steyn as a coach is expected to provide a significant boost to the Washington Freedom team. Steyn, who recently retired from playing, brings his wealth of experience from campaigns with the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sunrisers Eastern Cape teams. His presence as a legendary figure on American shores, mentoring and guiding the young talents in the squad, is a truly exciting prospect.
Sanjay Govil, the owner of Washington Freedom, expressed his satisfaction with the assembled squad, emphasizing the importance of building a winning culture from the team’s inception. According to Cricbuzz, he expressed satisfaction with the team they have put together. He mentioned that Moises and Greg have a track record of winning championships with the Sydney Sixers, and it’s crucial to establish a winning culture from the beginning for a young franchise.
